Fit and comfort are extremely important with Fidelity Custom Earphones. Whether you’re performing, rehearsals, or listening to your iPod, you will likely be using them for several hours each day. A proper fit is also responsible for keeping sweat from making its way up the ear canal.

Good Impressions
A poor fitting IEM can lead to discomfort, a tendency to fall out of the ear, and poor sound quality as sound leaks around the non-perfect seal. This could result in other negative consequences, such as the volume setting and mix being compromised to adjust for the poor sound quality, inadequate hearing protection due to the poor seal.
With custom IEMs, a good fit is a primarily the result of a good, deep ear impression.
First, we request that the audiologist use a 2” bite block to keep the mouth open while the impression material sets. This is because jaw movement slightly alters the shape of the ear canal. With Fidelity’s, you need to maintain a good seal when your jaw moves into a wide-open position while singing or speaking. Second, we request that the audiologist use a silicone based material. This material important because it maintains the true shape of the ear and allows us to make a more accurate earpiece. Third, it is also important to have the impressions taken as deeply as comfort allows, preferably just past the second bend in the ear canal. This increases the hearing protection of the Fidelity’s by adding mass between the external stage volume and the eardrum.

Note the Bite Block
Last, we require the entire outer ear. It is very important that the audiologist overfill the area between the tragus and helix area completely filling in the anti-helix area. This area behind the anti-helix (flap at the top of your ear) is important because this is where the Fidelity Custom Earphones lock into place, assuring that the seal is secure and the earpieces don’t move.
Because the deterioration of the ear impressions due to the dirt and earwax on them, it is important to have new ear impressions made every couple of years.
Please remember, that making ear impressions is very important for the proper seal of the Fidelity’s. At any time should an audiologist have any questions, please have them feel free to call our office and speak to one of us about the proper way we need the impressions to secure a proper and great fit.
